South Africa

With stunning hotels, varied landscapes, and some of the most dramatically scenic roads anywhere, South Africa is among the best active destinations on the planet.

On one of our recent forays, we combined the sweeping foothills of the Drakensburg Mountains and horse country north of Durban with the charming wine towns and vineyards of the Western Cape. Then there’s Cape Town itself where, thanks to the local friends we’ve made over the years, we know all the best hikes, restaurants, views, and cycling routes. After a hard day of wining, dining, and exploring the countryside, we stay at such fabulous hotels as Hartford House (located on a stud farm with 700 racehorses), La Résidence, and Mont Rochelle Hotel & Vineyard in Franschhoek. Other favourite destinations include the wild Karoo’s outpost town of Oudtshoorn and the oceanside whale capital of Hermanus, where we stay at the fabulous Birkenhead House.
